Water electrolysis was discovered about 230 years ago, but it took one century until technical application
became feasible. Starting from the late 1800s, electrolysers based on the liquid alkaline technology reached maturity and commenced a decade-long success story, reliably providing hydrogen at scale for industrial application.
However, throughout the 20th century, fossil fuel based hydrogen production methods became predominant and displaced water electrolysis into niches, especially at hydroelectric sites.
In recent decades, electrolysers appeared back on stage, driven by the advent of low-cost renewables
together with surging decarbonization policies, and not least by the development and ongoing advancement of the PEM technology for water electrolysis, Hydrogen Contango has achieved unique technical break-through in the field, and we keep developing innovative solutions to accelerate a sustainable comeback of electrolysers at real economic competitiveness, Our goal is no less than the broad and finite cost- & quality revolution of PEM electrolysers, to make carbon-free hydrogen production great again, greater than ever before.
The European Green Deal aims to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, with no net emissions of greenhouse gases, and where economic growth is decoupled from resource use
Independent of the electricity source, projected costs of hydrogen production from PEM electrolysis are expected to decline over time, These declines will be driven by technology advancements (including reductions in electrolyzei capital costs), economies of scale, and other factors.
